an analysis of third grade students’ simple past tense mastery at smpn 5 siak hulu
This study aims to assess the ability of third-grade students at SMPN 5 Siak Hulu in simple past tense, and in what aspects of simple past tense that seems to be the problem for the students to use simple past tense. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, the researcher involved 20 students that has completed a multiple-choice test which consist of 40 questions. The test focused on four aspects: affirmative simple past tense, negative simple past tense, interrogative simple past tense, and giving adverb of time in simple past tense. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated bad proficiency, with an average score of 33.35 out of 100. Most students had challenges in the aspect of negative simple past tense, and interrogative simple past tense, with the average percentage of wrong answers in 67 % and 77.5% out of 100%. The results suggest the need for continued emphasis on practicing simple past tense, particularly in negative and interrogative simple past tense. The study provides valuables insights for educators seeking to improve students’ simple past tense ability.
