This study aims to enhance students' understanding of the concept of atomic
structure and the periodic system of elements in Grade X at SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru
by implementing the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) model. The
research employed an experimental design with randomly selected control and
experimental groups. To assess students' comprehension of atomic structure, pretest
and posttest instruments were utilized. The findings revealed that the average pretest
score before implementing the POGIL model was 27.16, while the average posttest
score after implementation increased to 84.49. Based on data analysis, the POGIL
model significantly improved students' understanding of atomic structure concepts, as
indicated by tcount (3.507) ≥ ttable (1.66) with dk = 78, α = 0.05. According to the Ngain
test, the improvement in students’ understanding falls into the high category with
a score of 0.78. Additionally, the application of this model fosters critical thinking
skills and collaboration among students. This study suggests that the POGIL model be
applied to various other chemistry topics to create a more interactive, in-depth, and
student-centered learning experience.
