The quality of education of a nation should have a learning process that trains the mindset of the community. In the learning process, student activity is the main focus of a teacher's attention, but not all teachers are able to carry out learning that can be centered on students.
The learning that is widely applied is conventional learning. In conventional learning, teachers have an active role and are the main role in the learning process. One approach that is able to design a teaching and learning activity by considering the objectives of the learning is the Understanding by Design (UbD) approach.
The purpose of this study was to describe the cognitive learning outcomes of junior high school students by applying the UbD approach to vibration and wave material in class VIII junior high school and to determine the differences in cognitive learning outcomes of students in classes that apply the UbD approach with classes that apply conventional learning on vibration and wave material in class VIII junior high school.
This research was conducted at SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in the even semester of 2024/2025. This study uses a quasi-experimental research type with a posttest only control group design. The population in this study were all students in class VIII with samples selected randomly. The data collection method is by providing an instrument in the form of 20 multiple-choice questions to test students' cognitive abilities. Based on the results of descriptive analysis, the cognitive ability scores of students in the experimental class were higher than the control class. In the experimental class, the average score obtained was 87.89 with a very good category and the control class average score obtained was 74.48 with a good category. The results of the inferential analysis obtained the results that the Sig. value = 0.000
