Students' Perceptions On Learning Vocabulary Through English Songs As An Outside Of Classroom Activity At English Study Program Fkip Universitas Riau
This study aims to investigate the perceptions of second-year students at the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau toward learning vocabulary through English songs as an out-of-classroom activity. Recognizing vocabulary as a fundamental component in language acquisition, the research explores the effectiveness of English songs as a self-directed learning strategy. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to 38 students. The results reveal a generally high level of positive perception across five key indicators: students’ interest in listening to English songs, the effect of English songs on vocabulary learning, students' attitudes and perceptions, the benefits, and the practical usage of songs for vocabulary enrichment. Most students agreed that English songs not only enhance their vocabulary acquisition but also increase motivation, improve pronunciation, and provide enjoyable learning experiences outside the formal classroom setting. These findings support the integration of music as a supplementary tool in English language learning and highlight its potential in fostering autonomous vocabulary development. The study recommends that educators consider students' preferences and informal learning strategies when designing vocabulary instruction.
