A Study On English Study Program Fkip Universitas Riau Students’ Understanding Of Idioms In Twitter
Abstract: This research aims to determine the level of English idiom comprehension among fourth-semester students of the English Study Program at Universitas Riau, particularly in the context of the social media platform Twitter. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Riau, in 2025. It measures both general understanding and the ability to recognize idioms used in English tweets. The method used is quantitative descriptive. Data were collected through an online questionnaire completed by 38 students from class 4A. The instrument consisted of 21 statements divided into two parts: general idiom comprehension and recognition of specific idioms (pure idioms, semi idioms, and literal idioms). The responses were analyzed using a Likert scale, and the average score was calculated to determine the level of understanding .The results show that students’ understanding of idioms in Twitter is at a medium to low level, with an overall average of 2.5. Most students demonstrated a lack of knowledge of idioms, especially pure idioms such as “spill the beans” and “bite the bullet”. Literal idioms were slightly more recognizable. Only a small number of students used context clues or searched for the meanings of unfamiliar idioms when reading tweets. The study concludes that students still face difficulties in comprehending idioms in digital environments like Twitter. Therefore, it is recommended that idiom materials be integrated into English language learning by utilizing relevant social media content to improve students’ understanding and engagement with authentic language use.
