ABSTRACT
Peat water has a high content of organic matter and color, so it is not
suitable for direct use for clean water without processing it first. Processing that
can be done is the coagulation-flocculation method using natural coagulants. The
natural coagulant used is made from corn seeds (Zea mays L.). This study aims to
analyze the ability of coagulant corn seeds (Zea mays L.) in the form of flour and
starch to remove organic matter and color from peat water. Corn flour contains
protein ranging from 8-11% and corn starch of 0.56%. The research variables
were coagulant particle sizes of 200 mesh and 400 mesh at temperatures of 30°C,
35°C, and 50°C. The results showed that the corn starch coagulant was able to
remove 53% organic matter and 94.8% color, whereas in biocoagulation using
corn starch coagulant the results were 5% for organic matter and 2.8% for color.
This allowance is not large enough because the organic matter in peat water that
can be removed is soluble and the low protein content in corn starch is unable to
bind pollutant particles in peat water.
