Akomodasi komunikasi etnis rohingya di tengah kehidupan sosial masyarakat kota pekanbaru
Pekanbaru City is one of the cities that many immigrants come to in search of asylum. One of them is the Rohingya Ethnic immigrants caused by the forced migration of Rohingya Ethnic from Myanmar so that there are adaptation challenges they face in Pekanbaru, including language barriers and cultural differences that often lead to misunderstandings. The aim is to analyze the strategies of convergence, divergence, and the phenomenon of over- accommodation in their interaction with the local community.
The research used a descriptive qualitative method with a symbolic interaction approach, through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of refugees, Immigration Detention Center officers, and the surrounding community.
The results show that convergence strategies are carried out through the use of Indonesian, open non-verbal communication, and cultural adjustments such as religious practices similar to local communities. Divergence is seen in the use of Rohingya language among fellow refugees, withdrawal behavior from conversations that are not understood, and maintaining traditional eating habits, clothing styles, and social roles. The phenomenon of over-accommodation appears in the form of dependence on refugees who are more fluent in Indonesian, which sometimes hinders self-adaptation. This research concludes that Rohingya communication accommodation is dynamic, involving adaptation and identity preservation, with the risk of misunderstanding due to over-accommodation
