ABSTRACT
Propylene oxide (PO) is a basic chemical product that is widely used to produce derivative products such as polyurethane, polyether polyols, propylene glycol, glycol ethers, propylene polyols, and several other derivative products. Indonesia's PO production currently still depends on imports to meet domestic demand. Therefore, it is worthwhile to plan the establishment of a PO plant located in Bontang Utara Subdistrict, Bontang City, East Kalimantan, with a production capacity of 25,000 tons per year based on the results of market demand analysis in Indonesia.
The UOP MTO process is one of the propylene production processes with low costs, minimal catalyst usage, and continuous regeneration capability. The HPPO process involves oxidizing propylene from the UOP MTO process with hydrogen peroxide and using TS-1 catalyst to produce PO. The UOP MTO & HPPO processes are more environmentally friendly as they do not produce other organic compounds that cannot be recycled and pollute the environment. The PO plant's electricity requirement is 3,233.96 kW. The water source used in the PO plant design is from the Bontang River in East Kalimantan, with a total water requirement of 1,181,792.40 kg/hour. The liquid waste generated at the PO plant consists of water (H₂O) mixed with methanol (CH₃OH) and domestic waste. The total liquid waste generated is 7,694.09 kg/hour. Process control at the PO plant uses instrumentation such as sensors, controllers, recorders, and plant safety devices like alarms.
TCI based on the economic analysis results is Rp 1.4 trillion. TPC is Rp 1.1 trillion. The profitability analysis results in a PBP of 2.12 years, an IRR of 21.47%, a BEP of 40%, and an NPV of Rp 156 billion. Based on the economic feasibility analysis conducted, it indicates that the plan to establish the PO plant is feasible to proceed to the next stage.
