a study on the students’ ability in reading comprehension of recount text at smpn 8 pekanbaru
This research aimed to assess the reading comprehension skills of students in understanding recount texts at SMPN 8 Pekanbaru. A quantitative research method was employed to gather data from the participants. Through purposive sampling, 32 students from class 8H at SMPN 8 Pekanbaru were selected as the sample. The data collection was carried out using a multiple-choice reading comprehension test. Based on the results of the data analysis, this study found that the mean score of the student is 70. The analysis was conducted based on six indicators, finding factual information, finding main ideas, finding references, finding the meaning of words, finding inferences, and finding language features The findings show that identifying main ideas is the area in which students performed best, achieving the highest score of 81%. This was followed by identifying references at 79%, and both finding factual information and making inferences at 75%. Other reading skills assessed included recognizing language features, with an average score of 64.37%, and understanding word meanings, which proved to be the most difficult skill, with a score of just 49%. The results indicate that students possess a good level of ability in understanding recount texts, with an achievement rate of 70%. Consequently, this study offers valuable insights into students’ reading comprehension skills related to recount texts.
