analisis serotype streptococcus pneumoniae dari nasofaring pada pasien empiema toraks di rsud arifin achmad provinsi riau
Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria are the most common cause of communityacquired
pneumonia and can become carriers without clinical symptoms.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a commensal bacterium of the upper respiratory tract,
specifically the nasopharynx. Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause 20-30% of all
community-acquired pneumonia cases in Indonesia and about 50% of patients with
pneumonia will develops pleural effusion and 5-10% of patients with pleural
effusion will becomes thoracic empyema
Methods:
This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design, aimed
to analyzing the serotype of Streptococcus pneumoniae from the nasopharynx in
patients with thoracic empyema at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province
Results:
The study involved 53 subjects, the most common age group was 26-44 years with
22 subjects (41.5%). The majority were male 20 subjects (75.5%). Pneumonia was
the most common cause of thoracic empyema in this research. The most dominant
clinical symptoms were cough (86.6%) and breathlessness (84.9%). The average
length of hospital stay was 12.2 days, with an outcome of recovery in 58% of
patients. Streptococcus pneumoniae was found in nasopharynx as much as 1,89%
and showed 19F serotype meanwhile the pleural fluid culture showed no growth of
Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Conclusion:
There was no significant correlation between Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype
found in nasopharynx with characteristic and clinical manifestation in patient with
thoracic empyema
