This study analyzes words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that
demonstrate adherence to and violations of politeness maxims in
WhatsApp messages exchanged between students and lecturers. The
research method used is descriptive qualitative with a pragmatic
approach. The analysis technique was applied to 60 written
communication data samples between students and lecturers within the
Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program, Faculty of
Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Riau. Adherence to and
violations of six maxims were found, namely the maxims of tact, humility,
agreement, generosity, praise, and sympathy. These polite utterances
contribute to creating a more conducive learning environment, while
violations occur because students do not yet fully understand the social
context, timing, and the lecturer's position as an interlocutor.
