a study on problems faced by english study program students in speaking at universitas riau
This study investigates the speaking challenges encountered by 40 students of the English Study Program at Universitas Riau through a descriptive quantitative approach. Using a structured 24-item questionnaire, the findings reveal moderate difficulties in various aspects of speaking, with vocabulary knowledge emerging as the most significant obstacle (Mean = 3.28). Limited lexical resources place a heavy cognitive load on learners, resulting in frequent pauses, circumlocution, code-switching, and disrupted fluency—patterns that intensify anxiety and reduce confidence, ultimately hindering active participation in oral communication. Addressing this issue requires targeted vocabulary instruction, recycling strategies, and context-driven speaking tasks. In contrast, the least severe—though still notable—constraint is the lack of structured speaking practice (Mean = 2.67), which indirectly affects improvements in pronunciation, grammar, and confidence. Without consistent and scaffolded opportunities for speech, learners struggle to internalize and apply linguistic gains. Overall, this study underscores the importance of integrating vocabulary-focused instruction with meaningful speaking opportunities to support learners’ communicative competence.
