This study examines the phenomenon of breast cancer patients in Pekanbaru City, by
looking at its impact on self-concept and communication experiences. This study aims to
analyze communication experiences that shape the self-concept of breast cancer patients in
Pekanbaru, both from internal and external dimensions. This study fills the gap in
understanding how communication experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant, influence the
formation of self-concept in breast cancer patients. The urgency of this study lies in the
importance of intrapersonal communication in supporting the quality of life of patients,
especially in dealing with the physical and psychological impacts of breast cancer. The novelty
of this study is the exploration of the role of intrapersonal communication as a means of selfhealing,
as well as how social support and physical changes contribute to the process of
forming patient self-concept.
This study uses a qualitative research method with a Phenomenology approach. The
subjects of this study were 5 informants who were Breast Cancer Patients. The object of
research related to this study is the Self-Concept of Breast Cancer Patients in Pekanbaru City.
Data collection techniques used were interviews, observation and documentation. Data
analysis techniques began with collecting data, reducing data, presenting data and drawing
conclusions.
The results of the study showed that communication experiences, both internal and
external, were significant in shaping the self-concept of breast cancer patients in Pekanbaru.
Internal factors, such as self-acceptance and identity, and external factors, such as family
support, social environment, and community perception, influenced how patients viewed
themselves during treatment. Positive communication experiences, such as emotional support
from family and community, strengthened patients' self-concept and mental resilience, while
negative communication, such as discrimination, could damage self-esteem. In addition, social
support and spiritual reflection played an important role in helping patients accept physical
changes and maintain psychological resilience. Overall, intrapersonal communication and
social support played a crucial role in shaping patients' self-concept during the breast cancer
treatment process.
