Analisa Nilai Steam Economy Pada Multiple Effect Evaporator
ABSTRACT
The Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) is a critical unit within the Recovery boiler system in the pulp and paper industry, functioning to concentrate black liquor before combustion for energy and chemical Recovery. This study aims to analyze the Steam Economy value in the evaporator unit at PT Tanjungenim Lestari Pulp and Paper to evaluate the efficiency of steam energy utilization. The methodology includes literature review, field observation, interviews with operators, and collection of daily operational data from the evaporator unit and the Distributed Control System (DCS). The data were analyzed using mass and energy balance approaches, focusing on calculating Steam Economy as the ratio between the mass of water evaporated and the mass of steam consumed. The results indicate that the Steam Economy ranged between 4.45 and 4.60 during the observation period, with the highest value recorded on March 14, 2025, at 4.60. The most influential operational parameters on Steam Economy were steam temperature and pressure, black liquor total solids concentration, and fouling on heat transfer surfaces. These findings demonstrate that the evaporator system is operating efficiently and meets industry standards. The study concludes that optimizing process parameters, controlling fouling, and maintaining vacuum stability are essential strategies to enhance evaporator efficiency and improve overall energy performance in the Recovery boiler system.
