Alternatif Penggunaan Mgso4 Pada Stage Bleaching Proses Mechanical Pulp Sebagai Chelating Agent
ABSTRACT
Magnesium sulfate (MgSO₄) has been proposed as an effective and economical alternative to chelating agents such as DTPA (Diethylene Triamine Pentaacetic Acid) in bleaching processes, particularly in the hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) bleaching method. MgSO₄ serves as a source of magnesium ions (Mg²⁺), which can compete with catalytic metal ions to bind to H₂O₂ or fiber surfaces, thereby reducing the negative effects of these metal ions. This study aims to provide an alternative solution to the use of DTPA chelating agent by using MgSO4. The method used is to perform bleaching processes in the form of Medium Consistency (MC) Bleaching and High Consistency (HC) bleaching by varying whether using DTPA, MgSO4, or a mixture of DTPA and MgSO4 with the parameters tested in the form of pH, residual H2O2 and brightness. In MC bleaching, it was found that using a mixture of DTPA 1 kg/ADt and MgSO4 3 kg/ADt can be used as an alternative to using DTPA without any mixture. In HC bleaching, it was found that using a mixture of DTPA 2 kg/ADt and MgSO4 2 kg/ADt can be used as an alternative compared to using DTPA without any mixture. MgSO4 alone cannot replace DTPA, but MgSO4 can be mixed with DTPA to get more effective results.
