Analisis Resepsi Mahasiswa Universitas Riau Terhadap Perilaku Flexing Pada Unggahan Akun Instagram @Erinagudono
The behavior of flexing or showcasing luxury on social media has become increasingly common among public figures and has sparked various debates in digital public spaces. One notable case is the luxurious lifestyle content posted by Erina Gudono, wife of Kaesang Pangarep and daughter-in-law of Indonesia’s seventh president, through her Instagram account @erinagudono. These posts have received diverse responses from the public, including university students who actively engage with social media. This study aims to explore how students at the University of Riau interpret Erina Gudono’s flexing behavior and their positions in reading the messages conveyed through the media.
This research uses a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach. The theoretical framework is Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding model, which categorizes audience interpretations into three positions: dominant reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants consisted of ten University of Riau students from various social and cultural backgrounds. Data analysis was conducted using a coding method through three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding.
The findings show that in the dominant reading position, three informants accepted the media’s message that flexing is a negative behavior. In the negotiated reading position, five informants reinterpreted the meaning of flexing by considering personal, social, and cultural values. Meanwhile, in the oppositional reading position, two informants rejected the media’s meaning and viewed flexing as a form of self-expression or a legitimate symbol of achievement. This study affirms that students are active audiences who interpret media messages based on their individual social and cultural backgrounds.
