The correlation between speaking anxiety and Presentation performance of english Department students at fkip unri
SUMMARY
This study examined the correlation between speaking anxiety and
presentation performance among sixth-semester English Education students at
Universitas Riau. Using a quantitative descriptive design, data were collected from
32 students through the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA)
questionnaire and video-based presentation assessments evaluated by three
independent raters. Statistical analysis using Spearman’s Rank Correlation revealed
a very weak negative correlation (ρ = -0.029) with a significance value of p = 0.874,
indicating no statistically significant relationship between speaking anxiety and
presentation performance. These findings showed that factors other than anxiety
such as preparation, confidence, and topic familiarity may play a more significant
role in students’ presentation outcomes. The study recommends that educators
focus on building students’ confidence and presentation strategies rather than solely
reducing anxiety.
