a study of metaphor in football commentary by peter drury
This study aims to analyze the use of metaphor in football commentary
by Peter Drury. The data were taken from the YouTube video entitled “FULL
MATCH: France vs. Croatia | 2018 FIFA World Cup Final”, uploaded by FIFA
on November 19th, 2022. The researcher transcribed the commentary and found
550 expressions in total. From these, 141 metaphorical expressions were
identified and classified into three main types of conceptual metaphors: 54
structural metaphors, 15 ontological metaphors, and 72 orientational metaphors.
Among the structural metaphors, there were 19 war metaphors, 24 journey
metaphors, and 11 economic metaphors. The ontological metaphors included 4
container metaphors, 4 substance metaphors, and 7 personifications. Lastly, the
72 orientational metaphors consisted of 12 up-down metaphors, 14 in-out
metaphors, and 46 front-back metaphors. This research shows that metaphor is
an important element in football commentary, helping to create vivid and
imaginative language that enhances the viewer’s experience.
