an analysis of word formation process of slang used in hello, goodbye, and everything in between movie

This study examines the role of slang in communication and identity formation in the film Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between. The data were analyzed using Pavlik’s (2017) theory of word formation and Zhou and Fan's (2013) framework for the functions of slang, with dictionaries employed to determine the meanings of slang expressions. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, with data collected from the movie script. The analysis identified ten word formation processes: affixation, compounding, conversion, shortening, blending, back-formation, reduplication, lexical ellipsis, and eponymy. The research reveals three main functions of slang among characters: achieving politeness (27.03%), emotive function (43.24%), and pursuit of self-identity (29.73%). The findings highlight how slang contributes to character development and emotional expression, enhancing our understanding of linguistic innovations and their cultural significance in contemporary youth communication.
