ABSTRACT
Coconut plants (Cocos nucifera L.) are multipurpose plants where all parts of the plant can be used to meet human needs. Coconuts have a strategic role in the national economy.In the process of peeling coconut skin, many still use manual methods and some also use coconut peeling machines. But there are still shortcomings in peeling young coconut skin. Therefore, a revision of the mechanism for the process of peeling young coconut skin is needed. So from several references that are used as benchmarks for making a more practical young coconut skin peeling machine and also more efficient in the process of peeling young coconut skin. Therefore, a young coconut skin peeling machine was designed with an upper grip lever mechanism and a lower cutting knife that can increase efficiency, safety, and neatness of the peeling results. The design process includes a literature study, where this process aims to find ideas for developing a mechanism for peeling young coconut skin. Component design planning, material selection, which aims to determine the right material for making this tool. Until the process of making and assembling the machine, this process includes several machining processes, namely: Turning, Drilling, Welding, Bending, and Grinding. The components of the young coconut peeling machine that are made are: frame, side knife arm, lower knife arm, upper clamping shaft, lower clamping shaft, upper knife arm and arm support. This machine uses an electric motor as the main drive and a clamping system that ensures the stability of the coconut during the peeling process. The test results show that this machine is able to peel young coconuts with a maximum diameter of 200 mm effectively and safely. And from several test data carried out with different coconut diameters, the average time is 49 seconds. This innovation is expected to help the community, especially young coconut processing business actors, in accelerating the production process and reducing the risk of work accidents.
