ABSTRACT
This study presents the preliminary design of a Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) plant utilizing methanol through the oxidative carbonylation process. Dimethyl carbonate is a vital organic compound widely used in the pharmaceutical, coating, and fuel additive industries. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 17,000 tons per year and is planned to be located in the Bontang Industrial Area, East Kalimantan. The main raw materials—methanol, oxygen, and carbon monoxide—are sourced domestically. The production process involves a fixed-bed multitube reactor (R-101) operating at 200°C and 10 atm, achieving a methanol conversion rate of 88%. The reactor design includes mass and energy balances, equipment specifications, and process control systems. The reaction products are further purified using a distillation system. Economic analysis estimates a total investment of IDR 267,385,215,334, with a favorable Gross Profit Margin (GPM), indicating that the plant is economically viable. The establishment of this plant is expected to reduce Indonesias dependency on imported DMC, generate new employment opportunities, and contribute to the national economy through potential exports.
