Pengaruh Waktu Iradiasi Gelombang Mikro Terhadap Kualitas Karbon Aktif Dari Serabut Tandan Kosong Kelapa Sawit
Activated carbon has been produced through the process of pre-carbonization and chemical activation using potassium hydroxide and microwave irradiation. Raw material used in this research was fibers of empty fruit bunches of oil palm. The method used was experimental method. The process of irradiation was performed at various duration times of irradiation of 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes with constant irradiation power of 630 watts. The activated carbon was characterized by the method of methylene blue, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The duration times of irradiation of 15 minutes resulted the optimum methylene blue adsorption of 86.07 (mg/g) and highest surface area of activated carbon of 318.60 (m2/g). SEM-EDX analysis showed that the more number of carbon pores were obtained after irradiation, furthermore the percentage of the number of carbon atoms (C) was 85.5% and of the carbon weight was 81.29%. XRD analysis showed that the activated carbon was a semi-crystalline having two peaks of 21,975o and 44,090o. The analysis resulted wide layers of aromatic (La) decreased from 1,2756 nm to 1.2390 nm, the height of the layer of aromatic (Lc) increased from 2,7991 nm to 3.8603 nm and the number of layers of aromatic (N) increased from 6,996 nm to 9.551 nm after irradiation.
Keywords : activated carbon, fibers of empty fruit bunches of oil palm, chemical activation, microwave, adsorbance.
