This research aims to analyze the influence of emotional intelligence and learning independence on the social studies learning activities of students at state junior high schools in Tambusai Utara District, with learning motivation as an intervening variable. The background of this research is rooted in the low learning activity of students, as observed from their lack of engagement in discussions, asking questions and completing assignments. Low learning activity can affect students' academic achievements and their ability to face future challenges. Therefore, this research is essential to understand the factors that can enhance students' learning activities.
Emotional intelligence plays a critical role in supporting learning activities. Students who can manage their emotions well tend to have higher motivation, the ability to collaborate and resilience in overcoming learning difficulties. Additionally, learning independence helps students develop responsibility, discipline and initiative to actively learn without relying on others. Both factors significantly contribute to creating an optimal learning process.
This study employs a quantitative approach using path analysis to measure the relationships among variables. The research sample consisted of 354 students from state junior high schools in Tambusai Utara District, selected proportionally. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and documentation, and then analyzed to determine the influence of emotional intelligence and learning independence through motivation on students' learning activities.
The results of the study show that emotional intelligence and learning independence significantly influence learning activities, both directly and indirectly through learning motivation. Motivation acts as a key factor that strengthens this relationship, where students with high motivation tend to be more engaged in learning activities, such as participating in discussions, completing assignments and asking questions. This highlights the importance of considering motivation in learning. Enhancing emotional intelligence, learning independence and learning motivation are effective strategies for improving students' learning activities.
