ABSTRACT
Benzoic acid is an intermediate material needed in Indonesia. The benzoic acid plant is designed with a production capacity of 18,000 tons per year. The raw materials used are toluene and oxygen, with the assistance of cobalt acetate catalyst through the toluene oxidation reaction. The average import of benzoic acid in Indonesia is 8,339 tons per year (BPS, 2023). It is expected that the establishment of this first benzoic acid plant in Indonesia will meet both domestic and international demand.
The plant is planned to be located in Kuripan Kidul Village, Kesugihan District, Cilacap Regency, Central Java. The raw material of propene is supplied by PT Pertamina RU IV Cilacap. The benzoic acid plant requires a significant amount of power, so an internal power substation and other power sources will be built within the plant area. Wastewater will be treated through Tertiary Treatment, which includes filtration, activated sludge, and chemical processing. Hazardous waste (B3) from deactivated catalysts will be managed by a third party, PT Krakatau Steel WWTP. Each piece of equipment in the benzoic acid plant is equipped with a control system to maintain process variable values at set points, and safety is ensured through valve control and alarms.
The economic analysis shows that the total capital investment (TCI) is IDR 628,037,268,276, working capital investment (WCI) is IDR 94,205,590,241, and total production cost (TPC) is IDR 394,573,781.68. The revenue from the sales of benzoic acid products is IDR 252,259,335,556 per year. The profitability analysis of the benzoic acid plant is determined based on the return on investment (ROI), payback period (PBP), internal rate of return (IRR), break-even point (BEP), and net present value (NPV). The calculated ROI for thebenzoic acid plant is 32.62%. The PBP is 2.3 years. The IRR is 24.041%. The BEP occurs at 20.43% of production capacity. The NPV is IDR 413,020,006,584.20 with a discount rate of 20%. The profitability analysis indicates that the toluene oxidation process for the benzoic acid plant is feasible and represents an attractive investment.
