a study on the reading habits of second-year students of the english study program at riau university
This study aimed to investigate the level of reading habits among second-year students of the English Study Program at Riau University. A descriptive quantitative method was used to collect data from 39 students selected through cluster random sampling. The research instrument was a 24-item Likert-scale questionnaire based on Gaona and Gonzales’s (2011) five indicators: attitude, reading frequency, books read which includes both types and quantity, time spent on reading, and motivation. The results revealed that the overall level of students' reading habits was medium, with a mean score of 86.05. In detail, the mean score for attitude was 3.58, reading frequency was 3.43, time spent reading was 3.60, and motivation was 3.65, all of which were in the medium category. The indicator of books read had a mean score of 3.69, which falls into the high category. These findings reflect the national tendency of moderate reading interest in Indonesia and highlight the importance of further institutional and pedagogical support to foster stronger reading engagement among EFL students.
