Perancangan Sentra Pengolahan Coconut Fiber Dengan Penerapan Sustainable Architecture
ABSTRACT
Indragiri Hilir Regency in Riau Province is the largest coconut producing region in Indonesia, with a plantation area of 340,720 hectares. About 75% of Indragiri Hilir's population depends on the plantation sector, especially coconut, which produced 263,282.60 tonnes in 2023. Coconuts are processed into various high commercial value products, such as coir fibre, shell, and coconut water. Palas Island, one of the villages, relies on coconut farmers for its livelihood, although the potential for coconut fibre utilisation is still minimal. Coir products have high economic value, and their processing can be utilised in various industrial sectors, including carpets, textiles, and organic growing media. Indonesia's growing exports of coir fibre products, particularly to China with a value of USD 4.75 million, represent a significant market opportunity. To optimise this potential, the design of the Coconut Fiber Processing Centre on Palas Island is proposed as a solution to process coir waste into value-added products. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study, combined strategy, and literature review to determine the most appropriate theory in supporting the design strategy. Systematic Layout Planning method and Blockplan Algorithm will be applied in the building for cocofiber production with the application of Sustainable architecture, this centre aims to reduce waste and maximise the use of natural resources. The design concept of this building is inspired by coconut fibre which has a circular structure to protect the building from climatic conditions. This structure is adapted as the main idea of the design to reflect protection, resilience, and balance with nature.
