correlation between teachers’ questioning skills and learning motivation of the eleventh grade students at smkn 2 pekanbaru
This research investigates the relationship between teachers' questioning skills and students’ learning motivation at SMKN 2 Pekanbaru. The study is grounded in the understanding that questioning is a critical instructional strategy used to engage students, stimulate their thinking, and assess their understanding. Effective questioning is believed to influence students' motivation to learn, which is essential for successful educational outcomes.
The study used a quantitative correlational research design. The population consisted of 1,005 students and 111 teachers of the eleventh grade, from which 33 students and 30 teachers were selected using cluster random sampling. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires based on validated indicators: teachers’ questioning skills were measured using dimensions from Asril (2018), while students’ learning motivation was assessed using indicators from Uno (2012, 2008), covering both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
The results showed that most students and teachers rated questioning skills in the “Moderate High” category, and students’ learning motivation also fell predominantly within the “Moderate High” range. Statistical analysis using Pearson Product Moment revealed a moderate positive correlation between the two variables, with r = 0.418, indicating a significant relationship.
The study concludes that the better the teachers’ questioning skills, the higher the students’ motivation to learn. This highlights the importance of enhancing teachers' abilities in crafting and delivering questions that are clear, thought-provoking, and engaging, to foster an active and motivated classroom environment.
