ABSTRACT
The riparian zone of the Siak River plays a crucial role in influencing biodiversity, the water cycle, and the lives of the surrounding communities. The ecosystem here is often threatened by activities that cause environmental pollution, land degradation, and more, which ultimately affect water quality and wildlife habitats. Therefore, research, education, restoration, and monitoring activities related to the riparian zone need to be facilitated through a Riparian Research Center to support its management and preservation, as well as to serve as a stabilizing agent. The design of the Riparian Research Center in Pekanbaru adopts a biomimicry architectural theme that is nature-oriented in its design concept. This approach supports the building's function in fostering a closer connection between humans and nature. The use of natural elements has both physical and psychological impacts, thereby raising awareness of the need to improve the quality of human life and the environment. This approach involves replicating complete ecosystems along with fundamental ideas that appear as they naturally do. There are five additional dimensions of potential mimicry at each level: appearance (form), composition (material), construction (method), operation (process), and functionality. The data collected for this design includes primary data such as field studies and interviews through direct observation, and secondary data such as the Siak River's water quality reports from research journals. The building’s design concept is inspired by the Nypa fruticans plant, which thrives around the Siak River and symbolizes the close relationship between humans and nature. In this way, the biomimicry architectural approach aims to raise public awareness of the importance of restoring and improving the quality of the riparian ecosystem in the Siak River.
