Activated sweetcorn husk (Zea mays saccharata Sturt) treated with H₂SO₄ has been studied for its effectiveness as an adsorbent due to its large surface area and abundant active sites within its structure. This research aimed to determine the optimal adsorbent dosage and the optimum pH for the adsorption of Rhodamine B dye. The adsorption process was conducted in batch mode using various adsorbent dosages (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 g) and adsorbate pH values (2,
4, 6, 8, and 10). Characterization of the sweetcorn husk included analysis of moisture content, ash content, and Methylene Blue adsorption capacity, which were compared to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) No. 06-3730-1995. Surface morphology was examined using SEM-EDS instrumentation, and pore size was measured using ImageJ software. Functional groups present in the husk were identified via FTIR Spectroscopy. The surface charge of the husk was evaluated by determining the point of zero charge (pHpzc). The adsorption capacity of the corn husk toward Rhodamine B was analyzed using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The optimum activation condition was achieved using 1 M H₂SO₄ , yielding a moisture content of 10.00%, an ash content of 1.66%, and a Methylene Blue adsorption capacity of 10.3146 mg/g. SEM-EDS analysis revealed that before activation, the elemental composition of the husk included C, O, Si, and K, whereas after activation only C, O, and K remained. The functional groups identified in the corn husk included O-H, C-H, C=O, C=C, and Si-O. The pHpzc value was determined to be 3.2. The optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 0.75 g, which resulted in an adsorption efficiency of 81.93% and an adsorption capacity of 1.6856 mg/g. The optimum pH for adsorption was determined to be pH 6, with an adsorption capacity of 2.9215 mg/g. Based on this study, it can be concluded that both the adsorbent dosage and the pHpzc significantly influence the adsorption process, as indicated by a p-value of less than 0.05 in the One-Way ANOVA statistical test.
