Pra-Rancangan Pabrik Vinyl Chloride Monomer Proses Acetylene Hydrochlorination Dengan Alat Utama Stripper (S-101)

Vinyl chloride is an important monomer in the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) industry, with domestic demand projected to reach 179,440 tons by 2025. This study proposes a preliminary design for a vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant with a capacity of 89,700 tons per year at the Balaraja Industrial Estate, Banten, using acetylene and chlorine as the primary feedstocks. The process is organized into three core units: (1) hydrogen chloride (HCl) synthesis by combining hydrogen and chlorine in a fired heater reactor (R 101), (2) gas phase hydrochlorination of acetylene over a K₂PdCl₄ catalyst in a fixed bed multitube reactor to produce VCM, and (3) product purification via a cryogenic stripper (S 101) to achieve ≥ 99% purity while recycling unconverted feed. Equipment design—including the number of radiation and convection tubes, furnace geometry, and a 43 tray stripper standing 6.45 m tall—was determined using heat and mass transfer calculations, radiation and convection load analyses, and the logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD) method. Economic analysis, based on a 2024 chemical plant cost index of 879, estimates a total fixed capital investment of IDR 2.78 trillion. Operating costs cover feedstocks (acetylene, chlorine), utilities (steam, electricity, cooling water), labor (602 shift and 95 non shift personnel), and overhead. Financial projections indicate project viability, with a payback period of 5.8 years, an internal rate of return of 16.2%, and a benefit–cost ratio of 1.45. Sensitivity analysis shows that ± 10% fluctuations in VCM selling price, raw material costs, and capital investment do not jeopardize feasibility. The proposed design is expected to reduce import dependence, satisfy national VCM demand, and generate new employment opportunities.
