Persepsi Masyarakat Terhadap Penolakan Pendirian Gereja Di Kota Cilegon Provinsi Banten
This research is motivated by the controversy surrounding the establishment of the HKBP Maranatha Church in Cilegon City, Banten Province, which reflects the complexity of the relationship between regulations, public perception, and social dynamics within the context of religious freedom in Indonesia. Although religious freedom is constitutionally guaranteed in Indonesia, its practical implementation often faces various challenges. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, conducted in Cilegon City. The research informants include several groups: religious leaders, community leaders, members of social organizations, local residents, and authorities involved in decision-making regarding the construction of houses of worship. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results reveal differing perspectives between church congregants and local communities, influenced by value systems, social experiences, and distinct social structures. A culturally and religiously homogeneous environment, along with strong collective values, causes some community members to adopt a cautious attitude toward change, particularly regarding the establishment of places of worship. Additionally, public perception is shaped by religious ideologies, the stance of community organizations, and the circulation of information through social media. In this context, the active role of the government and community leaders is essential in fostering inclusive, educational, and socially harmonious communication.
