Populasi Dan Gangguan Monyet Ekor Panjang (Macaca Fascicularis) Sekitar Pemukiman Di Desa Pulau Sengkilo Kecamatan Kelayang Kabupaten Indragiri Hulu
ABSTRACT
Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) increasingly pose problems
for residents in Pulau Sengkilo Village, Indragiri Hulu Regency, due to habitat
loss and the resulting human-wildlife conflict. This study aimed to assess the
population of long-tailed macaques and identify forms of disturbances caused by
their proximity to human settlements. Data collection involved direct observation
using the concentration count method, interviews with 42 purposively selected
respondents, and a review of the literature. A total of 306 individuals across 15
groups were recorded in four hamlets. The population structure was dominated by
juveniles, which indicates active reproduction. The monkeys primarily disturbed
residents by entering gardens, damaging crops, and stealing harvests, particularly
during the morning and late afternoon hours. Habitat encroachment, coupled with
the abundance of food sources from community agriculture, exacerbated the
conflict. Preventive measures such as using smoke, firecrackers, and traps were
only partially effective. The study concludes that the conflict stems from
overlapping land use and calls for ecosystem-based management strategies that
involve both communities and local authorities to mitigate risks and support
sustainable wildlife coexistence.
