Evaluasi Pengkayaan Omega-3 pada Pakan Komersial terhadap Benih Ikan Gurami (Osphronemus gourami)
Gourami (Osphronemus gouramy Lacapede, 1801) is one of the freshwater fish commodities with a high economic value. Presently, gourami cultivation in Indonesia appears to be promising, with a strong consumer demand. Apart from having dense meat and delectable flavour, gourami also has high nutritional value and contains more proteins compared to other freshwater fish.
Overall, this study aims to produce gourami with high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and shorten the rearing period for gourami fingerlings. Specifically, the study aims to analyse the enrichment of commercial feed with omega-3 and to boost the growth and nutritional value of gourami fingerlings carcasses. The study is expected to inform farmers about the ideal dosage of omega-3 fish oil for commercial feed enrichment, which can increase the growth and nutritional value of gourami, therefore improving the production.
Rearing of gourami fingerlings was carried out at the Laboratory of Marine Microbiology, Department of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, University of Riau, while the proximate feed test was carried out at the Laboratory of Agricultural of the University of Riau. Meanwhile, the EPA and DHA fatty acid tests were carried out at the Laboratory of Calibration and Certification Testing, IPB University. The main materials in this study were gourami fingerlings (Osphronemus gourami) obtained from a fish farmer in Sawah Baru Village, Regency of Kampar, and the omega-3 fish oil with the SEA-QUILL trademark produced by PT Natures Products, Inc. U.S. This study employed a completely randomised design (CRD) with 4 experiments and 3 replications. Furthermore, the procedure was carried out in 4 stages, including 1) Preparation of materials, tools, aquaculture fish rearing tank, and experimental fingerlings, 2) Enrichment of commercial feed with fish oil, 3) Proximate testing of Omega-3-enriched fish feed, 4) Fish rearing. The parameters measured were absolute weight growth (g), absolute length growth (cm), specific growth rate (%), feed conversion ratio (%), feed efficiency (%), survival rate (%) hepatosomatic index (%), somatic viscera index (%), mesenteric fat index (%) and EPA and DHA fatty acid levels in gourami flesh.
The results showed that the enrichment of omega-3 fish oil in the experiment P3 (15g/kg feed) had the best effect on raising the EPA and DHA fatty acid levels of gourami flesh and increasing the growth of gourami fingerlings. P3 (15g/kg feed) produced absolute weight growth of 9.07 g, absolute length growth of 4.80 cm, specific growth rate of 1.17%, feed conversion ratio of 2.47%, feed efficiency of 40.54%, survival rate 95%, index hepatosomatic of 3.33%, somatic viscera index of 3.65%, mesenteric fat index of 3.27%, EPA fatty acid level of 2.85%, and DHA fatty acid level of 2.31%. Additionally, the water quality parameters during the study were considered “Good” with a temperature of 28-32oC, pH of 5.2-6.7, DO of 6.5-8.5 mg/L, and NH3 of 0.14-0.85 mg/L.
