Calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O) or gypsum is one of the most useful processed materials. Applications of calcium sulfate dihydrate are as a building material, a chalk-making material, an additive in the manufacture of portland cement, and as an additive in certain foods such as tofu and some medicines and pharmaceuticals. The process of forming calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) by reacting calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)¬ and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Calcium hydroxide is fed into the reactor (R-01) from the mixer (M-01) when the temperature is < 40 and sulfuric acid from the mixer (M-02) when the temperature is 40 . The reactor used in this process is a continuous stirred tank reactor. The operating conditions for the gypsum formation reaction refer to Ullman's Encyclopedia which takes place when the temperature is < 40 and the pressure is 1 atm. The conversion of formation of calcium sulfate dihydrate obtained is about 95-99%. The next stage is the separation stage, which aims to separate calcium sulfate dihydrate with water, sulfuric acid, and other water-soluble impurities. The separation process using a rotary vacuum filter with the product of this separation in the form of cake will be forwarded to the Rotary Dryer and the filtrate will be forwarded to the evaporator, the final result of the separation stage is calcium sulfate dihydrate product with a purity of 99%. The main device design is an evaporator which functions to concentrate the sulfuric acid produced from the separation stage. The type of evaporator used is a long tube vertical evaporator. The evaporator operates at a temperature of 175 with a pressure of 17.64 Psi. The results of the economic evaluation of the factory showed the ROI value of 40.30%, POT of 2.24 years, IRR of 22.743%, and BEP value of 35%.
