The Relationship of Peer Social Support and Academic Burnout in Nursing Students

Abstract
Background: Academic burnout is a condition in which a person experiences physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by demanding academic situations over a long period of time. Students majoring in nursing can be at risk of academic burnout since their routines life and tasks are encountered in the study. One of the factors that can influence academic burnout is social support. Objective: To determine correlation of peer social support and academic burnout in nursing students. Methods: this study used a correlational descriptive method with cross sectional approach. The sample used in this study was 250 nursing students with total sampling technique. The research instrument involved a peer social support and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS). Data analysis in this study used Chi-Square Test. Results: A total of 250 respondents, the majority of 247 respondents (98,8%) had high category peer social support, and the rest were moderate peer social support. 153 respondents (61,2%) experienced academic burnout in medium category, and the res were in the high and low categories. Based on the statistical test obtained p value = 1,000 > α (0,05). Conclusion: There is relationship of peer social support and academic burnout in nursing students. Researchers expect nursing students to be able to manage their time effectively, manage work overload in carrying out routines without too much pressure and manage stress well (coping stress) to avoid academic burnout.
