VASCULAR CELL ADHESION MOLECULE-1 (VCAM-1) EXPRESSION ON AORTA OF WISTAR RATS ATHEROSCLEROTIC POST ADMINISTRATION OF MANGROVE FRUIT EXTRACT (Sonneratia alba)

Sonneratia alba is a plant with high antioxidant content. Antioxidants are proven to be able to inhibit the formation of foam cells. Endothelial dysfunction due to hypercholesterolemia causes the expression of VCAM-1 which plays a role in foam cell formation. In this study, we will analyze the relationship between the administration of Sonneratia alba mangrove fruit extract on the expression of Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in rats fed an atherogenic diet. A total of 16 paraffin blocks filled with abdominal aortic tissue of Wistar male white rats were divided into 3 groups: standard group (S) was given a normal diet, positive control group (P) was given an atherogenic diet while treatment group (T) was given an atherogenic diet and Sonneratia mangrove fruit extract. alba. The relationship between the administration of Sonneratia alba mangrove fruit extract was assessed by immunohistochemical examination. Wide expression of VCAM-1 is expressed in percent and taken at 5 fields of view. The broad expression of VCAM-1 was examined using the Photoshop Image Analysis application. The results of this study showed that the average expression of VCAM-1 in the S, P and T groups was (0.050 ± 0.116), (0.103 ± 0.030), (0.061 ± 0.021), respectively. Statistical analysis with One Way Anova showed a significant difference (p=0.006). Further analysis using the Post Hoc test showed a significant difference in the P and T groups (p = 0.022). Based on these results it can be concluded that Sonneratia alba mangrove fruit extract was able to suppress VCAM-1 expression in atherosclerosis-induced rat aorta at the initiation stage.
