SUMMARY
The increase of industry in a country has an impact on improving the environment pollution, especially textile industry. Methylene blue (MB) is a dye that is widely used in the textile, biochemical dyes and printing industries. This dye has a benzene group which makes it difficult to degrade naturally, it is toxic and causes genetic mutations. Effective way of degradation was chemical methods, one of them is the Fenton method. In this study, Fenton heterogeneous composite MnO2/SiO2 catalyst was synthesized and used for the degradation of methylene blue. The composite synthesis method was the sol gel method by reacting KMnO4, glucose and SiO2 with a one-step method. Optimization of the degradation of methylene blue is by varying the concentration of methylene blue, volume of H2O2 and mass of the composite were carried out. MnO2/SiO2 composites were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform-Infra Red Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results of the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) characterization showed a cryptomelane-type manganese oxide catalyst and the Fourier Transform-Infra Red Spectroscopy (FT-IR) characterization showed the presence of lattice vibrations of Si-O, Si-O-Si and Mn-O, O-Mn-O. The MnO2/SiO2 composite was applied as a catalyst for methylene blue to degrade methylene blue. Optimum methylene blue degradation was obtained at a concentration of 39 ppm methylene blue, 15 mL H2O2 volume and 100 mg composite which was able to degrade MB 61,32% in 120 minutes. Catalys weight is the most dominant factor in MB degradation.
