SUMMARY
The development of technology and industry has caused environmental pollution. The waste comes from industrial areas such as the textile dye industry. The dyes often used are methylene blue. Methylene blue is a synthetic dye that has toxic because it has a stable compound in the form of an aromatic compound that is difficult to degrade, so it can pose a danger to the environment and humans. Wastewater treatment methods that attract a lot of interest are photocatalyst. Photocatalyst is a has been proven to be able to decompose methylene blue into CO2 and H2O. Semiconductors that are widely used in photocatalysts are ZnO which has a low price and strong oxidizing ability. In this study, ZnO/fly ash composite with palm frond extract was synthesized using precipitation method. Based on the characterization using XRD show that the type of ZnO in the ZnO/fly ash composite and palm frond extract is wurtzite with a crystal size of 21.44 nm. The results of UV-DRS characterization show that there is a decrease in band-gap energy from 3.21 eV on ZnO to 2.4 eV on ZnO/Fly ash composite with 10 g palm frond extract. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the ZnO/Fly ash composite with palm frond extract is able to degrade 10 ppm methylene blue with an optimum degradation percent of 91.2% using a composite mass of 50 mg within 105 minutes.
