SUMMARY
Rubber fruit shell biomass is a rubber plantation waste that has been extensively studied as a source of activated carbon. This study aims to study the characteristics of activated carbon obtained from the chemical-physical activation process based on variations in temperature and time. Temperature and time are factors in the physical activation process, because the higher the temperature and the longer the time it will improve the characterization of activated charcoal. The preparation of the rubber fruit shells starts from the sample which is dried for 2-3 days then crushed and sieved with a particle size of 100-200 mesh. Followed by chemical activation of using 100 mL of 10% H3PO4 solution, stirred at 260 rpm for 30 minutes, allowed to stand for after 24 hours, the sample is neutralized using mineral free water so that the reamaining impurities are lost and do not interfere with the subsequent adsorption process. Activation was continued physically in the furnace with variations in temperature (250; 300; 400)oC and time (15; 30; 45) minutes to obtain activated charcoal from rubber fruit shells. The activated rubber fruit shell charcoal produced was characterized by determining the water content, ash content and iodine adsorption capacity,all characteristics of the rubber fruit shell charcoal complied with SNI No.06-3730-1995, the best condition obtained for activated charcoal is the one with the highest adsorption capacity 1.249,47 mg g-1 found in the physically activated sample at 400oC and 15 minutes. Rubber fruit shell activated charcoal with the best conditions was then analyzed for functional groups using FTIR (Fourier Transform infra red) and surface area analysis using BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller). The FTIR results show C=H (aliphatic), O-H (stretching), C=C (aromatic), C=O (carboxylic acid) groups, surface area 20.693 m2 g-1, pore diameter 16.151 Å and pore volume 0.1026 x 10-2 cm3 g-1.
