ABSTRACT
Greece is a member country of the European Union (EU) which experienced an economic crisis in 2009. Greece asked the EU for help to deal with the crisis, which the EU responded by forming an institution that manages Greek debt called Troika. Greece must meet the requirements given by the Troika, namely implementing Austerity Measures in order to receive the funds that have been provided. Greece had to cut salaries, lay off workers, and cut the state budget which resulted in new problems within Greece. To improve its economy, Greece is working with China in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). BRI programs have succeeded in bringing progress to the Greek economy, so relations between Greece and the EU have deteriorated.
The author uses the perspective of Liberalism, with the level of nation-state analysis. The theory that the author uses is the theory of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) which explains the reasons why Greece is participating in the BRI program with 3 indicators, namely Investor specific advantages, Internalization advantages, and Host Country specific advantages, as well as data that the authors collect comes from books, journals, articles, and websites, to add to the author's references in discussing this research.
This study has the conclusion that Greece receives loans from BRI because the program offered by BRI is more profitable than the European Union's Austerity Measures program, because BRI provides lower interest, an exclusive program owned by China, and Greece wants to develop its port sector in the Mediterranean Sea
