ABSTRACT The development of defense equipment continues to progress and conflicts involving military forces are still occurring throughout the world to this day so that Indonesia as a sovereign country must have the industrial capability to produce sufficient quantities of defense equipment and have advanced technology to defend the country. However, the reality is that in terms of quality and quantity, Indonesia's defense equipment is out of date. Until now, the domestic defense industry has not been able to meet Indonesia's defense needs. To meet the needs for defense equipment and the development of the domestic defense industry, Indonesia has made visits and meetings to various countries, including France, to establish cooperation in the defense sector. This research discusses Indonesia's interests in working with France in the defense sector in 2020-2022.
The theory used in this research is rational choice theory. The data used is secondary data derived from books, journals, documents, electronic media, and internet websites. The research method uses qualitative methods by analyzing data from the listed sources.
According to the results of a study, France and Indonesia are cooperating together in the defense sector because France can supply Indonesia with the necessary defense equipment. The price of the defense equipment is in range with the government's budget for defense. Transfer of technology from France that can develop the capabilities of the local defense sector and bilateral relations between the two nations have been established over a long period of time due to the common interests of the two nations.
