ABSTRACT
This research discusses Singapore's interest in increasing defense and security cooperation with China. This cooperation began in 2008 which was named the Defense Cooperation and Security Exchange (ADESC) cooperation. Then in October 2019, the Ministers of the two countries held a meeting to formalize the increased cooperation in Beijing. This agreement marks the 30-year bilateral relationship between the two countries. The contents of the agreement will be carried out in the form of bilateral military exercises, academic and think tank exchanges, and annual ministerial meetings.
This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by focusing on analyzing and concluding the problem under study through available data or literature review. This research uses the perspective of realism and the theory of international cooperation.
In this study, the author found that Singapore saves increased cooperation with China for political purposes, namely maintaining relations with a rising country, namely China. Then, the security interest is to improve the security of the Singapore state, seeing the vulnerability of Singapore's maritime territory being disturbed by neighboring countries such as Malaysia. Meanwhile, Singapore has a military interest to improve its military capabilities and capacity. The improvement that occurred was a commitment to hold bilateral naval, air and land training, provide mutual logistical support, establish a Visiting Force Agreement, as well as academic exchanges and think tanks.
