SUMMARY
Industrial development causes environmental pollution that can be harmfull to human’s life. One of the waste pollution is in the textille industry which produces dye waste. Chemicals used in the manufacture of textilles are toxic and difficult to disintegrate. Therefore, several methods of removing these dyes have been developed such as precipitation, electrochemistry, adsorption and others. One of methods that quite highly effective is photodegradation. Photodegradastion is an effective method that can decompose dye waste using UV light. ZnO is one of the semiconductors that is widely used as photocatalyst. In this study, ZnO and Co-ZnO were synthesized using the precipitation method. Based on the result of the XRD, XRF, FTIR and UV-DRS characterization, the crystal sizes obtained for ZnO and Co-ZnO are 34.489 nm and 32.627 nm and the band-gap energy of ZnO decreasing from 3.21 eV to 2.20 eV after Co doping in ZnO. XRF result showed that the Co-ZnO contains 77.831% ZnO and 5.098% Co3O4. Based on the study, it can be concluded that Co-ZnO has an ability to degrade 30.709 % of 3 ppm methylene blue using 75 mg of Co-ZnO for 150 minutes.
