Aktivitas Antidepresan Ekstrak Metanol Biji Pinang Muda (Areca Catechu L.) Dengan Metoda Forced Swim Test Pada Mencit Jantan (Mus Musculus) Yang Diuji Secara Simultan
SUMMARY
Depression is a psychological illness that can occur in humans regardless of gender, age, and background. Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) has been studied for its potential as an in vivo antidepressant drug using the FST (Forced Swim Test) method or forced swimming test in single animal trials. The purpose of this study was to determine the antidepressant activity of young areca seed methanol extract simultaneously to see the effect of a demonstrator on test subjects. The study began with the extraction of young areca nut seeds using methanol as a solvent and continued with phytochemical tests. The in vivo FST method was chosen because it can be a special test to measure behavioral effects that are common for antidepressant treatments that have pharmacological effects. Mice were injected in several treatments, namely 0.9% saline, 10, 50 and 100 mg/kg methanol extract, and 20 mg/kg fluoxetine. performed 1 hour before acute FST. After obtaining the best dose, sub-chronic injection was continued for 7 days, on the 7th day sub-chronic FST was performed and ended with a toxicity test. The results of the phytochemical test of the methanol extract of young areca nut seeds showed positive results for the content of secondary metabolites, phenolic, steroid and saponin compounds. Methanol extract of young areca nut seeds has activity as an antidepressant as seen from the results of the percentage reduction in immobility time of multiple test animals which differ significantly from single test animals (27.25%; 21.65%).
