Gaya Bahasa Retorika Pada Naskah Lomba Pidato (Benron Taikai)
ABSTRACT
Rhetoric is a media technique for the art of speaking orally and in writing which is used to attract the attention of readers and listeners to the author's delivery. Beautiful language to persuade people, techniques for arranging vocal sounds and body movements are the roots of rhetoric. This research is a qualitative descriptive study which aims to identify the rhetorical language styles found in exchange students' speech texts in speech competitions (benron taikai). This research data consists of all the sentences in the speech texts of exchange students at the speech competition (benron taikai). In accordance with the problem raised, namely regarding rhetorical language style. The research data source is from 5 exchange student speech texts which have been transcribed by the author from downloading video recordings from the YouTube channel of the Japan–United States Conversation Academic International Education Association (Kokusai Kyouiku Shinkoukai Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin) from 2019 to 2021 which were accessed via the internet. This research focuses on problems related to rhetorical language style using James De Mille's theoretical studies.
The results of this research on speech competition scripts (benron taikai) show that 16 speech quotes from 5 foreign exchange students' speech texts were found consisting of asindeton rhetorical language style (ashindeton) 3 speech quotes, euphemistic rhetorical language style (enkyokuhou) 3 speech quotes, rhetorical statement language style (shuujitekgimonhou) 9 speech quotes and rhetorical language style zeugma (kubikihou) 1 speech quote. Based on this research, the rhetorical language style that stands out is the language style of rhetorical statements (shuujitekgimonhou) 9 quoted speeches contained in the collection of speech competition texts (benron taikai).
