Durian peel can cause environmental problems such as unpleasant odors. The chemical composition of durian peel with cellulose, lignin, and starch content makes durian peel can be used as raw material in the manufacture of activated carbon. In this research, a comparative study of physical activation using microwave and furnace after chemical activation with KOH on the synthesis of durian peel activated carbon on methylene blue adsorption was conducted. The synthesis of activated carbon began with carbonization at 300oC for 1.5 hours and then chemical activation with KOH (1:1) g/g, further physical activation was carried out in the furnace and microwave at 700oC for 2 hours and 750 Watt power for 75 seconds, respectively. Activated carbon characters determined include charcoal surface basicity, pHzpc, functional groups, lattice parameters, degree of crystallinity, crystal size, morphological structure, and elemental composition. The characterization results showed that the surface basicity of charcoal and pHzpc in KADM were higher than KADF. The functional groups detected through FTIR are O-H, C-H, C=C and C-O, but the O-H group does not appear on KADF. The crystallinity obtained by KADM was greater than KADF. The Lc/La ratio of KADF was higher than KADM which is proportional to the surface area obtained in methylene blue adsorption. SEM-EDS analysis indicated that the activated carbon surface formed uniform pores and was dominated by carbon and oxygen elements. Pore size determination using ImageJ software showed that the pore size of KADF was larger than KADM. The elemental composition of C obtained by KADF is greater than KADM. It can be concluded that physically activated samples using a furnace are more efficient than microwave in the methylene blue adsorption process based on variations in concentration, pH, and adsorbent dosage. The isotherms fulfilled in this study are Langmuir (KADM and KADF) and Freundlich (KADF).
