Karakteristik Edible Film Dari Karagenan Alga Merah (Eucheuma spinosum) Sebagai Plastik Biodegradable
The high use of plastic has a negative impact by causing environmental problems in the form of plastic waste throughout the world, especially in Indonesia. To reduce environmental pollution both land and sea pollution, it is necessary to carry out packaging technology in the form of plastics made from safe natural materials that do not damage the environment and can be decomposed quickly commonly called bioplastics or biodegradable plastics such as edible films. This study aims to determine the characteristics of red algae carrageenan E. spinosum edible film as biodegradable plastic and the best carrageenan concentration that produces edible film. This research method is a direct experimental method, namely making edible film from carrageenan of red algae E. spinosum. The experimental design used in this study was a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatment levels, namely 3%, 4% and 5% carrageenan concentration. The results of this study showed that the concentration of carrageenan had a significant effect on the characteristics of red algae E. spinosum carrageenan edible film. This is shown from the results of characteristics such as tensile strength at 3% concentration of 20.66 MPa, 4% concentration of 25.54 MPa, and 5% concentration of 30.67 MPa. Percent elongation at 3% concentration was 10.77%, 4% concentration was 15.98%, and 5% concentration was 20.59%. Water vapor transmission rate at 3% concentration was 19.20 g/m2/day, 4% concentration was 13.81 g/m2/day, and 5% concentration was 12.14 g/m2/day. The best treatment was shown in the 5% carrageenan concentration treatment which was in accordance with the Japanese Industrial Standard.
