Sintesis Dan Karakterisasi Biochar Berbasis Biomassa Pelepah Kelapa Sawit Melalui Variasi Suhu Pirolisis
The utilization of oil palm fronds as a source of biochar is a step to reduce the waste produced by oil palm plantations. The chemical composition contained in palm fronds such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin can be used as a source of biochar. Palm fronds were converted into biochar through pyrolysis process in N2 gas stream with temperature variation of 500, 600 and 700 °C for 60 minutes. The biochar produced was characterized through the determination of yield, content (water and ash) gravimetrically, functional groups with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) instrument, lattice parameters and degree of crystallinity using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and cation analysis with Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) using Nessler reagent in UV-Visible spectophotometry. The results of the characterization of palm frond biochar (BPS) obtained are that the yield has decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, on the other hand, the water content and ash content have increased. The increase in pyrolysis temperature resulted in a decrease in the intensity of the functional groups identified on the biochar surface, namely O-H (phenol and hydroxyl groups), C-H (asymmetric), C-O and C-H (bending) and C-N. XRD analysis of the biochar structure of the hkl (002) and (100) planes located at angles 2θ (002) 22.601°-24.039° and 2θ (100) 41.328°-42.966° respectively indicates the shape of the amorphous biochar structure. The Lc/La ratio obtained decreases with increasing temperature but the crystallinity level obtained is higher. The higher the temperature, the smaller the CEC value obtained. Meanwhile, the higher the temperature, the greater the number of cations. BPS500 is the most superior biochar of all BPS, the value of moisture content and ash content of BPS500 is smaller, namely 0.76% and 6.85%. The CEC value of BPS500 is 2.16 cmol (+) kg-1. The exchanged cations Ca2+, K+, and Mg2+ in BPS500 were 1.47; 0.06; and 0.21 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively.
