Representasi Toxic Masculinity Pada Tokoh Pria Dalam Film Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas

Toxic masculinity is one proof of gender inequality. One of the films that raises the issue of toxic masculinity is the film Like Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid Completely, which was released on December 2 2021 and directed by Edwin under the production of Palari Films. This film tells the story of a man in the twists and turns of his life when dealing with the impotence he suffers from due to childhood trauma. For this reason, this research aims to determine the meaning of the denotation, connotation and myth of toxic masculinity in male characters in films such as Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid Completely.
This research uses qualitative research methods and is analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The subject in this research is the film Like Dendam, Rindu Must Be Paid Completely, which has a duration of 114 minutes with objects in the form of scenes that represent toxic masculinity. Films like Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid Completely have a total of 95 scenes. Of the 95 scenes, researchers chose 12 scenes that represented toxic masculinity in male characters.
Based on the results and discussion in this research, it was found that the meaning of the denotation of toxic masculinity in the male characters in the film Like Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid Completely is a depiction of a male character who really wants to dominate, uses violence, thereby causing harm to the people around him. The connotation of toxic masculinity in the male characters in the film Like Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid Completely illustrates the nature of wanting to dominate and fulfilling masculinity stereotypes, making a man act as he pleases without thinking about the impact. The depiction of the meaning of the myth of toxic masculinity is proven by describing the existence of a patriarchal culture which results in gender inequality which not only occurs in women but also in men and influences attitudes and behavior.
