Representasi Baby Blues Syndrome Dalam Film “Baby Blues” Karya Andibachtiar Yusuf
The internet makes it easy for humans to communicate with each other and get information. The presence of the internet created the development of mass communication tools. Film is one type of mass communication that is often consumed by society today. Movies not only aim to meet the need for entertainment and information, but also serve as an educative function. Baby blues film is one of the educational films that raises the issue of mild depression experienced by postpartum mothers or baby blues syndrome. Although baby blues syndrome is included in mild depression, if not treated properly this condition can get worse and can endanger mother and child. The purpose of this study is to find out how the meaning of the denotation, connotation and myth of baby blues syndrome as well as the representation of baby blues sundrome in the film baby blues by Andibachtiar yusuf.
This study used descriptive qualitative methods, with Roland Barthes semiotic analysis. The subject of this study was a scene in a baby blues movie that contained internal and external factors that caused baby blues syndrome according to Henshaw. There are 10 scenes that have been selected and studied. Data collection techniques use observation, interviews, focus group discussion (FGD), and documentation. Analysis is carried out starting from looking for the meaning of denotation then connotation, then associating it with the meaning of myth based on the selected scene pieces.
The results of this study showed four discoveries. First, the meaning of the denotation of baby blues syndrome in the baby blues film found that postpartum mothers have not fully received support from aspects around them. Second, the meaning of denotation in this film is found the changes and demands given to women after becoming wives and mothers. Third, through the meaning of myth in this film, it is found that there is a patriarchal culture that develops and affects the gender role gap in the household. Fourth, it was found that the baby blues syndrome in the baby blues film is represented verbally and non-verbally by the main female character who experiences mild postpartum depression. This is described in the form of emotional disorders such as irritability and anger, excessive fear and anxiety, drastic mood swings, and feelings of isolation and loneliness. This research shows that social support, especially husbands, is very important.
